Onions

Frederick Hiam is one of the largest producers of Onions in the UK, growing and storing some 22,000 tonnes of Onions. Brown Onions account for 75% of the tonnage and Red Onions 25%. A range of varieties are grown and the focus is on the production of the highest quality bulbs for major retailers and our own Frederick Hiam branded packs.

With the harvest of the early set crop in late July, main crop harvest normally takes place in mid September. The organisation and execution of Maincrop Harvest is like a military operation with a squad of over 100 people involved in all aspects, from field harvest operations, hauling and store loading.

Storage of Onions is concentrated at the Brandon site next to the Onion Grader, minimising transport and road miles.

Modern ambient and refrigerated Bulk Storage together with refrigerated box storage are used to ensure crop is kept in good condition through until May / June the following year.
